Woking RFC 1XV 21 Old Glynonians 1XV 19
Woking, sponsored by Kwikcash had a similarly poor start to their game on Saturday conceding two early tries which meant they were playing catch up as the game moved towards the second quarter. Further woe for Woking as Glyns capitalised on some sloppy defence in the backs which allowed then to score their third try. Thankfully some aggressive clean out work from Chris Wallis in the Glyns twenty two was pounced on by captain Adam Smith and with good strength he surged over the line for a welcome try that Dan Edwards converted.
In the second quarter Woking applied considerable pressure that sapped the strength of the Glynonians. Woking were camped in the Glynonians half for extended periods, applying so much pressure that the Glynonians scrum half was forced to kick into touch backwards! The pressure paid off from the lineout as Woking caught and drove releasing John Hurthouse to touch down for the 5 points.
Woking began to dominate the game in the early minutes of the second half. Bruising runs from John Stedman and Nick Franchino stretched the Glynonians defence and Glyns conceded a rack of penalties for continuous infringements. While Woking fly half Dan Edwards was receiving some treatment for a blood injury, full back Wallis stepped forward and slotted two vital penalties.
Seeing the value of the penalties was a good Captain’s decision and this had taken Woking to within one score of wrestling the lead from Glyns. As the game came to a close, a great break from Neil Murphy put Woking deep into the Glyns half and as they scampered back to defend Glyns were penalised for more illegal acts. Up stepped Dan Edwards to slot the penalty and give Woking the lead that they held onto for the remaining minutes of the game.
Woking captain Adam Smith beamed after the game ‘What great team spirit and a fantastic result, just what we needed’.
