In a close and hard fought encounter at Kings Lane, Woking pulled off a cracking victory against league rivals Egham Hollowegians. Several enforced changes brought some second teamers up into the 1st XV, including second row Williams who produced a man of the match performance ou of the bag, prop Childs, flanker McGiven and centre England. Despite these changes the team was confident and determined not to play catch up rugby against an equally confident Egham side.
In bright but chilly conditions, the ground heavy underfoot the game got underway. The first 10 minutes went to Egham as they made ground from the kick-off, however following some stout defence, Woking broke out from near their line and were awarded a penalty for Egham flopping all over the ruck. Dan Edwards slotted the penalty with ease. Woking continued their pressure and deep in the Egham half Woking captain Adam Smith pounced on loose lineout ball and stormed over the line to score and stun the Egham home support. Dan Edwards slotted the penalty.
Woking made a good start to the second half with some aggressive rucking and counter rucking and second row turned flanker Dan Hills making some incisive runs from deep gaining ground and getting over the gain line. Egham came back into the game and put pressure on Woking nearly succeeding twice with interceptions that would have been clear run-ins. Egham turned over the ball at the breakdown and caught Woking unprepared as they spun the ball wide and outflanked Woking wide on the left for a good try that was converted.
From the restart, cheered on by travelling fans Woking made good ground. Powerful scrummaging and controlled rucking culminated in Dan Hills stretching the defence wide on the Egham left and scoring a cracking try. Edwards’ penalty faded across the posts as did a penalty effort that he had minutes later,
Woking ran the restart back and wide on the left seemed to be in when Evan Marchant was presented with a sitter of a try, however he dropped the lofted miss pass that was thrown in his direction and secured himself the bogey prize on Woking’s side for later punishment in the bar.
Egham mounted attack after attack - launched by their No. 10 ‘ Dicky’ and they piled the pressure on Woking. Good defensive play from Woking saw Aitcheson break out with interplay between Marchant, Bannister and Dan Edwards nearly culminating in an end to end try. The Edwards ran the ball from in his own 22 metres and was bundled into touch in the Egham left hand corner. Egham were pressing hard for the try and it took several one on one try saving tackles form Bannister, Edwards, Aitcheson, captain Adam Smith. In the dying minutes Woking were awarded a penalty on the half way lien and missed touch with the clearance, Egham ran the ball back and despite several attempts to break through the Woking defence the game finished with The Egham left wing being driven into touch in possession of the ball.
Woking Captain beamed with delight after the game as he tucked into his pasta supreme ‘That was a hard one, but the team spirit displayed and skill levels were very encouraging’.
