Woking travelled to Mitcham on Saturday for a friendly at Poulters Park. In what can only be described as typical rugby weather, wet windy and stodgy underfoot Woking took to the field and set about trying to run the ball as far as possible and not get bogged down in an upfront confrontation. The upfront battle was pretty even in the first half in the tight and whilst Woking’s forwards were more mobile they were regularly penalised at the breakdown for going off their feet.
It was intelligent work in the Woking backs that gave Woking the ascendancy in the first half as they compiled a good lead through tries from Aitchison, James and Dan Edwards with flanker Adam Smith chipping in with one too . Mitcham hit back with one solitary try in the first half with a catch and drive at the lineout trhat culminated in the try.
Woking got a bit bogged down in the early stages of the first half as the changes they made at half time led to a period of unsettlement. Chris Wallis at scrum half was tackling and probing around the scrum ruck and maul and when Woking broke to close the Mitcham line, Wallis darted over the line for a try but in so doing damaged his foot as a beefy Mitcham player fell on him. Wallis hobbled off and Grady was asked to slot in at scrum half from the restart. Woking’s Dan Hills and Adam Smith working in the loose ran the ball at Mitcham time and time again presenting Smith with a try, Tom Bennett and later fly half Dan Edwards. Woking wing Evan Marchant also sliced through the Mitcham defence to register a good try.
Woking Captain Adam Smith commented between mouthfuls of Shepherd’s pie after the game ‘ Mitcham stuck at it well in the game and the score does flatter us a bit – it was even Stevens in the forwards but we had a bit more pace in the backs’.
