It was a big day at Woking Rugby Club on Saturday as the club joined prop and vice president Justin Key in celebrating 30 years of senior rugby at the club. As a founder member and life vice president of the club it was a momentous day for Justin and current players former team mates and former players joined him in a testimonial match at the Recreation Ground . The weather was classic rugby stuff, wet, windy and soft for landings! This was helpful for the more mature of the players as there was some cushioning from the ground.

Both sides tried to play some running rugby and the old partnership of Fisher and Shepard in the centres for the JK XV was effective in the early minutes of the game, provided with spark from Paul Good at 10. Long-time friend and front row partner Paul ‘Taff’ Collins was in typically boisterous form as he dominated in the maul ripping out good ball for Steve Workman at 9 to use effectively.

After a good first quarter it was the Woking 2XV who eventually stretched JK’s XV wide on the right and with an overlap, Ross Flaherty touched down for a try wide on the right. Then New player Shaun Gilbert skated past the JK XV defence on the Woking left to score a good try and take the Woking lead to two scores.

Justin’s XV hit back though with a good try from Gordon Parry just before the break as he surged over in typically robust form. After some half time port both sides were fortified and Justin’s XV began to dominate possession in the early exchanges of the second half. Grinding out the territory Justin’s XV came up with the goods and secured the victory with tries from Steve Workman and Pip Barry who incidentally are lifelong friends. A fine and fitting result as Justin’s XV took the result 17-10.

Supported by a large crowd Justin was clapped from the field by both sets of players and friends and families alike. The whole party then returned to the clubhouse for a fine chicken curry, pint of ale and a small presentation was made to Justin of an original club shirt, a mug and some fine cufflinks. Justin thanked everyone for their efforts and support on the day and over the years in a short address - for once he was short of something to say!!
