Woking took on Chipstead and Guilfordians in a club double header on Saturday, with Chipstead 1's and 2's combining, and likewise with Guilfordians. This being the last pre-season friendly, two tough opponents were chosen to really test the strength of Woking's squad.
Woking 1's put in a very solid performance, starting strongly with two quick tries from Dan Edwards and Phil Robertson, converted by Mike Aitchison. Chipstead looked to be resurgent but Woking stood firm with a wall of Red/Black/White shirts in defence. Man of the Match Neil Murphy was in uncharacteristic form, putting in some huge tackles and barn storming runs, crossing the line to give Woking a 19-0 lead. in the second half, Chipstead grabbed a try against the run of play, but Woking responded immediately with some well drilled forwards moves resulting in Tom Bennett crossing the line for the final score of the game. 26-7.
Meanwhile, for the 1st half Woking 2's remained resilient in defence against a strong Guilfordians back line, and went into the 2nd half trailing 7-0. A number of injuries to some key players really hurt the Woking continuity and Guilfordians, bringing on some surprisingly strong substitutes, capitalised on the disarray that ensued, running in a number of tries to win the game comfortably at 32-0.
Club Captain Richard Grady could be heard talking to the club after the games, "What a fantastic way to end the pre-season. No quarters given and some extraordinary performances from people stepping up to face tough opposition. The season begins next week and as a club we head into it fearlessly!"
