Lightwater 3-10 Woking (friendly)
With Byfleet Rec. still unplayable after the recent rains, Woking traveled to Lightwater for a much needed friendly.
Significant changes to the Woking side proved effective as Woking soaked up early pressure from Lightwater with ease, strong tackling from debutante Matt Pullin, and the ever present Phil Robertson.
After 15 minutes of sustained pressure, the muddy conditions proving a hindrance to clearing the lines, Woking finally broke into the Lightwater half. Great phase play by the Woking pack, lead by Jon Hursthouse, gave Woking's 10, Aitchison, a platform from which to dart through the disrupted Lightwater defense and dash to the try line for the first points of the game. Conversion by Chris Wallis.
An unfortunate injury to outside centre Gareth Phillips delayed the game for a number of minutes, and, looking somewhat rattled, Woking saw out the remainder of the half camped on their own try-line. Not pretty to watch, but an excellent display of team defence and character. Notable big tackles coming in from Wokings scrum half James Bannister.
An exchange of penalties from Woking's Justin Dougherty, and Lightwater's 10, saw the only points of the second half, with end to end action thwarted at the last by muddy conditions underfoot and in hand. Captain Aitchison spoke to his team after the game, "We selected a very different lineup today, those that have committed to the training available over the last few months deserve their 1st team shirt, and did us proud. An excellent display of character, and certainly a significant amount of promise should the team continue training as a unit."
