Woking 24 - 5 Egham
A beautiful day for rugby allowed a very fluid match to be played on Byfleet Recreation Ground. Both sides showing bruising packs and skillful backs. The battle up front was won immediately by the Woking pack who's scrummage is becoming the pivot for the Woking backs to show their class. Off an early scrum Gareth Philips found space with a deft chip and chase, gathering himself to open the scoring. Egham bounced back almost immediately with some good positional kicking from their no.10 causing some last ditch tackling from Aitchison to concede a penalty which was taken quickly for 5.
Some strong words of encouragement behind the posts from skipper Aitchison fired the Woking ranks up, and the traffic was all one way for the remainder of the game with Aitchison, Edwards and Roberts adding tries to take the score to 24-5. Strong tackling off the bench from Gary Raife saw off any Egham advances, whilst big John Stedman and Tom Bennett saw of waves of defenders with strong ball carries. Stand out performance of the day was Gareth Philips at full back with a sublime kicking game keeping all pressure off Woking in defence. A solid team performance only hindered slightly be the early dismissal of Dan Hills after a last minute infringement on the ground.
Skipper Aitchison was quietly pleased after the game, "Another bonus point win puts us within 2 points of the promotion zone. We are showing our ability to do more than just grind out victories this season and I am confident that the bonus points we are accruing will really separate us going into the new year. Two very tough games coming up against league leaders Reeds, and 2nd placed Haileyburians will really show us where we are at. If we fire on all cylinders it will take a special team to beat us."
