Woking were without their influential and inspirational captain Mike Aitchison on Saturday as they faced up to a confident and strong Petersfiled side in the first round proper of the RFU junior vase competition. Woking had pipped Southampton by one point in the preliminary round of the cup the previous week and they had been warned by Southampton to expect an altogether tougher contest.
Losing second rows Matt Brennan and Jon Hursthouse too in the week saw Woking’s engine room disrupted. Further forced changes in the backs from the previous week also demonstrated a lack of continuity and consistency in the team and play in their early season fixtures. Whilst Woking stuck at the game, Petersfield were blessed with real pace in the backs which left Woking grasping at thin air on countless occasions. The leggy and pacey wings and full back ran through, round but not over despairing Woking defence.
