Woking looking to build from their 83-0 win the previous week put out a much unchanged side. Weather conditions were perfect, and from the kick off Woking looked strong. Very quickly Woking realised it was to be a long day as penalty after penalty was given against them for hands in places they should not have been. Raynes Park took the lead early on with a tap and go penalty. With some surprise the Raynes Park front row stepped forward for the conversion from out wide, and narrowly missed. He corrected this a few minutes later from another penalty just inside the Woking half, which was neatly slotted betweed the uprights.

Woking respond well with a very dominant pack driving Raynes Park to disarray in the scrum and being awarded a penalty try. Mike Aitchison had the conversion charged down, much to his dismay with the player clearly running offside. Woking the proceeded to put themselves to the sword conceding 3 penalties in very quick concession, all converted admirably by the Raynes Park prop. Taking the half time scorline in at 5 – 17.

The second half saw Woking return to form, scoring two well crafted tries through Rory Blundell and Mike Aitchison. Aitchison being injured going over the tryline passed conversion duties on to Mark Rose, who unfortunately shanked one wide. The score remained with Woking behind at 15-17. Further Woking pressure saw the forward pack push three scrums in a row over RPs tryline, but some odd decisions disallowed all 3 tries. Aitchison then opted to take the 3 points to give Woking the lead 18-17.

All Woking needed do was hold on to the ball. From the kick off this message clearly had not reached prop Colin Pearce, who, inspired by the RP prop decided to do an uncharacteristic kick. It spiralled beautifully straight out to touch from outside the 22, giving RP possession deep in the Woking half. Dave Nolan, fresh legs on at the end, picked up on Woking’s errors of the first half and got his hands in at the ruck. Up stepped the RP prop to slot the winning kick of the game on the whistle. 18-20.

Aitchison commented, “Absolutely gutted. We knew Raynes Park had a good kicker, and we gave them every opportunity to use him. The better team lost today, and deservedly so. We butchered 5 chances, and we handed the ball back to the opposition every time we needed to keep hold of it. Well played to Raynes Park, a great team display from them.”
