After a couple of tough weeks for Woking with injuries and bad results, Old Glynonians were welcomed to Byfleet recreation ground for the clash between 2nd & 3rd with points difference separating the two.
It was Glyns who dominated the early exchanges, using their lions share of the possession to continually probe the Woking defence in both the narrow and wide channels. However Woking stood up with some robust defence, especially from the midfield pairing of Dan Hills & Jim McGiven.
Unfortunately possession was scarce for Woking and when it came, it was lost via knock ons and penalties for infringements at the ruck. 2 tries from smart open play and a rolling maul from a 5 metre lineout took the score to 15-0 and it was groundhog day all over again for Woking.
Woking woke up after this and started to play some rugby in the Glyns half. The forwards were nicely orchestrated by scrum half James Bannister and newcomer Lewis Chance at 10. The pressure paid off and it was prop Matt Shepherd who crashed over from short range. Woking had a couple of other chances out wide just before half time but the final pass to winger James Plowright wasn't quite there.
Woking continued the urgency in the second half and worked hard through the forwards to retain possession and territory. It was now Old Glyns who started giving away penalties at the breakdown & for offside which allowed Woking to get downfield. The pressure paid off as Seb Murphy beat his man to crash over in the corner to take the score to 15-10.
Like last week, Woking ended up with 14 men on the field. Firstly James Bannister was dismissed for liberal use of the boot as Glyns professionally slowed down Woking ball in a dangerous position. As Bannisters time in the bin came to an end, Shaun Gilbert was sent from the field for a high tackle.
With time running out and the chance of victory still in sight, Woking continued to try and attack. Both forwards and backs dug in to try and make possession count in spite of lack of territory. However it was Glyns who hit back with a smart move leading to them crashing over under the posts. The last few minutes were seen out in the Woking half and Glyns saw out the game with a penalty as the last kick of the game.
Coach Pete D'Cruz commented "It was a case of a poor start costing us again & we can't afford to keep making these mistakes. Everyone is disappointed & knows we can do better. We have 2 weeks to regroup and start December afresh with the Egham game".
